Eminem's new record Recovery has two settings for the most part. The first setting is Not Confident in which Shady bemoans being both famous and addicted to drugs, and thereby unable to rap. The second setting is Confident in which (big surprise) Shady celebrates his recovery from his addiction to drugs, and lets us know he's a fucking good rapper over and over. Predictably, this grows thematically stale over sixteen tracks (though Shady keeps the sonics interesting.) However, there is one song that doesn't fit this pattern, and that's the bonus track.
The bonus track is pure nonsense. Eminem devotes first one verse comparing his car to a mogwai (the cute furry things from the Gremlins movies), then devotes another comparing himself to Hannibal Lector. It's pure stream of consciousness: he might be ad libbing the entire track. The critical thing though is that because Eminem sets aside his commercial agenda it's much more creative: without ever dropping the beat he simply lets his mind wander. Eminem of course spent most of the 1990s cultivating outrage and a persona as a prick. Here though he reveals an almost innocent love of wordplay (almost because he presents some grotesque images.) Em simply enjoys himself, making this Recovery's best song.
Listen to it.
