In
Che Part II
director Steven Soderbergh illustrates the second part of Che
Guevara’s life in which, having conquered Cuba, Che aims to
recreate his success in Bolivia. I got the impression throughout that
this was a misstep for Che, owing both to the subdued
atmosphere, and infighting among his men. Of
course, there’s nothing wrong with making a film in which not
much happens, so long as it’s engaging. This is the crucial
distinction between form and content. For me though, Soderbergh
doesn’t quite manage this, neither taking us to the heart of Che as
a person, nor elucidating the precise reasons for his Bolivian
failure. Instead, like Che’s men, I just waited, expected
something that never came. Skilful filmmaking of a kind I guess, but
not entertaining.
